LAWS OF SIMPLICITY

BOOK REDESIGN

In the larest scale typographic design I have ever done, I took an existing book and redesigned it from cover to cover.

INSPIRATION:
Upon reading John Maeda’s ‘The Laws of Simplicity’ I had felt inspired, and I wanted to redesign his mass printed novel into something that reflected the principals he had published for us.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT:
This was my first exploration into designing an entire chapter book. Every element is included in this book like the covers, index, chapter title pages, a foreword and more. I used his original imagery and illustrations from his book, but chose my own font, paper, and cover stock. I spent a long time pouring over multiple design manuscripts, books from dozens of studios, and studying typography to an advanced degree in relation to book design so I would be able to create something that didn’t just decorate, but reflected Maeda’s words and intentions.

TOOLS:
Designed with inDesign, printed and perfect bound at FedEx. French Paper Co. for cover and body paper.
